Cross-Sectional Study

This is your first original study: you design it, you collect the data, you analyse it, and you write it up. Five months, because that is how long it takes to do it properly.

A cross-sectional study is where most researchers produce their first piece of primary data. It is also where most of them get stuck, usually on one of three things: a questionnaire that was never validated, a sample size nobody can justify, or an IRB or ethical approval application that keeps coming back for corrections.

We take all three seriously. You will build and pilot your tool and calculate and defend your sample size, and we help you write the IRB form and the research proposal that goes with it, alongside someone who has been through the process before. Then we move to SPSS, to interpreting what the numbers actually say, and to writing the paper in IMRaD format.

Recommended first: a letter to the editor, case report or narrative review.

What you will learn

  • Types of study design and methodology
  • Types of data and variables
  • Questionnaire and tool development
  • Sample size calculation
  • Data collection and management
  • Data analysis, and the tools for it (SPSS, Excel)
  • Interpretation of results and statistical reporting
  • Full manuscript writing (IMRaD format)
  • Synopsis and research proposal writing
  • Familiarity with the IRB form and the ethical approval process
  • Journal selection and submission

What you walk away with: Your own original study, from protocol through ethical approval and data collection to a submitted manuscript.
